People freak out because they’re worth a huge amount of money. An original Action Comics #1 (introducing Superman) is worth about $3 million. The first Batman (Detective Comics #27) is worth about $1.5 million for an original 1939 copy. If you know anyone with original copies, that’s scary! Tons of collectors are looking. Even some of the old reprints are worth quite a bit.

Here’s the Superman link so you can read it online.

Unfortunately, Detective Comics #27 (first Batman) isn’t available online, but you can get a reprint copy at any bookstore. There’s a book by DC of the first Batman comics reprinted. I think it runs about $10 new.

    Hope that helps!

Look up comic book stores in your area. They normally have older comic books used for pretty good prices. :)

Both books were reprinted as part of DCs Millennium series in 2000, the only differences between the original books and the Millennium editions was that the reproductions had different covers, different house ads, small text features that explained why each specific issue had been considered historically significant to be reprinted, and the indicia (copyright and publication fine print) was in a different place than the originals and explained that each book in the series was a reprint. Any decent comics shop should have Millennium editions of Detective Comics #27 (first appearance of Batman), Action Comics #1, Superman #1, and Batman #1 at fairly reasonable prices. If you live somewhere that does have a comics shop nearby, you can search for some using google and compare prices. The books probably turn up fairly often on eBay as well.

Good luck (but you shouldn’t need much).

I can be really anal about my comics too. They are collectors items. The value of the comic is based on the condition it is in. I wash my hands and clear a clean space before i read mine. I always store them in comic bags with backing . I wouldn’t even let my wife read some of mine because she used to turn the pages really fast and bend them.
It’s not good to store them in a room where there is smoking allowed either. It will damage the paper. LOL that was one reason I quit smoking. I went into this new comic book store it was brand spanking new and the Person at the register and a couple a customers were in the store smoking at a table. I turned back around. I couldn’t believe it. The tragedy!

Look for “Batman Chronicles” vol. 1 and “Superman Chronicles” vol. 1.

Both books have the early issues and, if you want to buy them, cost under $15 each. Otherwise, you could go to a Barnes & Noble and read them there.

also don’y forget that sunlite and any other uv light is the number 1 thing that hurts comic books. best thing to do is bag and board your comic books and then store them in a trunk where no type of light can get to them
